Meadow / Zofia Stryjeńska

Splot is proud to present a kilim, whose design, attributed to Zofia Stryjeńska, was acquired from the archives of Professor Szulcha. Stryjeńska is considered to be one of the most successful Polish Art Deco artists. She presented her works at the now famed International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925, was awarded at the Venice Biennale, her works decorated the interiors of Polish ocean liners, and she designed a kilim for the Emperor of Japan. She sold many of her kilim designs, including this one, to the largest pre-war weaving workshop in Gliniany, owned by Mikhail Chamuła.

The kilim Meadow uses stylistics similar to the ones seen in the Candle kilim, characterised by an orderly yet varied pattern. The Zakopane style (Polish highland) meets modernist sensitivity, giving an exceedingly timeless effect. Something worth noting, and characteristic when it comes to Gliniany kilims, is the background made of wool dyed "on-three-ends", giving the tapestry the effect of a vibrating surface.
